Remembering Grandma Nancy

We love you and miss you Grandma Nancy!

I think the thing that I would highlight about Grandma Nancy if she lived a life of service. Always doing smiling, uplifting, and helping. Always pitching in to help, to clean, to do the dishes. Always baking, always helping, always mending.

We were there the weekend before she had her fall and you know what she was doing. She even made us cookies and offered to host us and would always come to visit us and make sure that we were loved and felt welcome.

This was from Feb 22nd.

The next day, she had a bad fall that she never could recover from. After several days, Mom let us know it wasn’t looking good. The kids all made these notes for Grandma to send some love and cheer her way.

On March 11, 2026, Nancy Jo Davis Tews, 89, returned to her Heavenly home from her long-time home on Pole Line Road, surrounded by four generations of her family. She enjoyed remarkable vigor and humor until the last two weeks of her life.

Nancy was the oldest daughter of Daniel Price Davis and Eula Fern Wright. The family moved to Filer when she was in third grade. She was very athletic and excelled as drum majorette with the ability to throw her baton spinning high and catching it, keeping it spinning, while marching in time at the head of the band. She and her brother Jay rode in the Filer riding club, galloping horses in drills for the County Fair Grand Entry with flags flying from their saddles. She graduated from Filer High School as Salutatorian in 1954.

Her uncle, Leon Wright, knew a neighboring young farmer, Gerald Tews. He and Gerald were in a bowling league together. One evening, Leon invited his niece to come to the bowling alley to meet this young farmer, who was a good guy and a hard worker. So, we can say they met in a bowling alley! They dated during Nancy’s junior and senior year, and were married after her graduation in June.

They built a very successful family farming and ranching operation during their 72 years of married life. The operation has influenced her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to either work on the land or who come back and enjoy a visit or a “Farm Camp” experience.

Nancy was an accomplished musician having mastered the piano, organ, and accordion. She played the piano or organ at hundreds of church and civic events, always doing so as a free-will offering. She extended her love of music to all of her family.

Nancy loved to sew and mend. Literally thousands of hours were spent creating many new dresses, quilts, suits, etc., and in repairing many worn and torn items. She always asked visiting family members if they brought anything that needed mending. If they didn’t, she would ask, “Why not?” Neatly folded at her sewing machine are three projects she was working on. This was her way of tangibly showing her love for her family in her 90th year.

Service to others filled her life. She was a dedicated wife and found happiness in working alongside Gerald on the farm and ranch. She was a wonderful mother to her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many others who needed love and encouragement. She was a kind and loyal friend to all who knew her, always a positive and supportive people-loving person. She felt her service helped her become more Christ-like.

Nancy was constant in her faith as a lifelong active member in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in almost every position possible. She loved her Savior, Jesus Christ, and had a very firm testimony of His love for her, and an appreciation of His atonement for her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Jay Davis, her sister Sandy Harmer, and a granddaughter Sadie Probst. She is survived by her brother Don, sister Joyce (Torrey), husband Gerald, her children Cindy (Leon), Julie (Ray), Gina (Jon), Jayne (John), and Jerre (Shannon), 20 grandchildren, and 45 great grandchildren.

Soon it was time to head up to Idaho for the funeral. Kevin, Bethany, and family stopped by for lunch on their way through. It was fun to get to see them and see baby John for the first time.

We made it up to Grandpa Gerald’s place for the family gathering. It was great to connect with lots of family members we hadn’t seen in a long time.

We love you Mom.

Memory lane celebrating the wonderful life of Grandma Nancy.

The funeral was very tender, emotional, and well done. We really appreciate all the effort family and friends put in to make it a special day. I dedicated the grave.

It was nice to visit the grave of Grandma and Grandpa Moore as well.

The kids really enjoyed some fun cousin time. Especially since Josie and Jimmy had new baby chicks!

Kauai

We’re off to Kauai, Hawaii, for a week with my mom and dad.

Tuesday. All packed, ready to go, and on time to the airport. Props to Kathryn for all her hard work getting us to this monumental point of the trip. Now we can begin to relax.

This display felt like the most wintery thing we’ve done all winter.

On the plane and ready to relax.

Nothing but smiles on this row.

One of Kathryn’s famous travel doodles.

Well, we made it to Kauai and look who we ran into on their way out! The kids got a few minutes of cousin time in Hawaii after all.

Mom and Dad were great hosts and got us all settled in comfortably. And props to Mom for washing all the sheets and towels and making the place look brand new for us after the Farmer crew came through.

Wednesday. We took a morning walk down to Pu’u Poa beach and walked along the beach for a bit. I loved the giant trees overhanging the water. The kids instantly wanted to play in the water, even though it was a bit chilly and we weren’t in swimsuits yet. Oh well. Let them.

All smiles with my Mākua (parents). Thanks for inviting us to come and hang with you.

Later in the day, we went over to Hanalei beach for some boogie boarding, sand castles, and good old fashioned relaxing. It was great.

While we got our sand trap kids cleaned up, Mom and Dad made us a delicious dinner. Then it was time to hit the sack.

Thursday. Off to Hā’ena State Park. Kathryn, Ashley, and I headed off to hike the Kalalau Trail while Mom, Dad, Eliza, Landon, and Zoey headed over to Ke’e beach. I was really looking forward to this part of the trip, and hiking along the Nāpali Coast did not disappoint. It was beautiful, and we enjoyed a nice chat with Ashley.

Back at Ke’e, these guys had been busy with all kinds of beach fun, making baths, and little villages, and hanging out with Grandma and Grandpa.

This was a really cool spot on the beach, right where the Limahuli Stream met the ocean.

Of course, we saw lots of Kauai’s iconic chickens, including this very stately rooster.

We stopped in Hanalei for some incredible fish tacos and shave ice. Yum. So good.

Friday. After hearing about it from her cousins, Ashley really wanted to try out a zipline. So we lucked out and found an opening at the famous Koloa Zipline. I’m sure Zoey would have loved to come, but she got to hang out with Grandma and Grandpa and  she’ll get a chance another year.

Our guide pulled out a Sarsaparilla plant. It smelled just like root beer.

Kathryn and Landon about to head off for a flight through the trees.

Ashley and Eliza coming in for a landing after the super long grand finale. It was a pretty epic line.

Afterwards, we met up with Mom, Dad, and Zoey at Poipu beach. We saw some Monk Seals.

And a whole bale of turtles!

In honor of Tim, we of course went and got some Puka Dogs.

We enjoyed snorkeling, wave conquering, body surfing, getting buried, making fake sand legs, and an epic sunset.

Saturday. Zoey found some beautiful pink hibiscus flowers. So pretty!

We chartered a flight around the island. Besides me, it was everyone’s first time in a small plane like this.

Marcus was a great pilot and guide. Zoey called him Captain.

Kaloa, where we did the zipline.

Poipu beach

A pair of humpback whales

Jurassic falls

Mount Waiʻaleʻale peaking out of the clouds for a brief moment.

Ke’e and Tunnels beach

How lucky! Another pair of humpback whales.

Kissy lips!

Wow, that was awesome! Afterwards, we met up with Mom and Dad for lunch at the famous Dukes restaurant.

Along with a slice of Hula pie.

Then we rented bikes at Kapa’a and rode the bike path. Not only was it beautiful scenery along the coast, Landon and Zoey loved their tagalong bikes.

And when in Hawaii, more shave ice 🙂

Sunday. Kīlauea Lighthouse in the background.

And it’s photoshoot time.

I love these caught in the moment pictures of pictures.

Church at the Kapa’a ward was very nice.

They had a really cool open courtyard church building.

After church, we took a scenic drive around the island and up Waimea Canyon Unfortunately, it was pretty socked in and we didn’t get to see any of the canyon. At the top, we waited for a while and the clouds finally broke a little and we got out of the car for a few minutes to look around.

And then there was this moment when Kathryn realized what I had tricked her into. The kids all couldn’t believe there wasn’t a shorter way to get back to the house than this.

We made a quick stop by the Wailua falls on the way back. It was really cool to have seen all of these places from the air yesterday too.

Monday. Happy faces after Nutella and fruit covered Hawaiian pancrepes from Grandma Julie.

Even though it rained all night and was still drizzling at the house, and then at Hanalei, we pushed on towards Tunnels beach and found some sunshine. On the way, we were greeted with a fabulous Hawaiian rainbow.

Tunnels beach was awesome! You couldn’t ask for a prettier backdrop.

We lucked out with some very calm waters and sunshine, enabling us to get out and snorkel. We saw lots of fun fish with their glowing fluorescent stripes.

And even a sea turtle! So fun!

So many treasures to admire.

We enjoyed our last meal, a repeat of Thursday with another round of fish tacos and shave ice.

Then there was the mad dash to clean, pack, and roll out to the airport to catch our redeye home. Here we are looking pretty good.

And then here we are on the layover in LA. Maybe not looking quite so good. A layover on a redeye, oof.

Back in SLC. Tim and Suzanne loaded up the car with treats. So nice! Thanks guys!

On the car ride home. Lol.

And that’s a wrap on this trip, well sort of. Now we just have to unpack, get caught up on the mountain of laundry, get the kids back into school mode, etc., etc. A big thank you to Mom and Dad for inviting us to come visit and sharing their place with us. And a huge high five to Kathryn for her amazing packing skills! Aloha

Holiday Recap

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and Happy Birthday Kathryn!

It was Zoey’s turn this year to put the star on the tree. Always a very exciting moment!

We went to the Tabernacle Choir Christmas Concert with Tim and his brother Greg. Suzanne was playing in the orchestra. It was an incredible production.

The stage was breathtaking.

I enjoyed a special date night with my girls.

Lyla and Sparkle returned for another year of holiday cheer.

It was an exceptionally warm and dry December. The kids got dirt bike rides when I got home from a winter ride with my friend Dave.

Kathryn is always so thoughtful and generous, helping everyone around her feel loved.

A very well decorated gingerbread house.

Oh the funny things that Lyla did this year!

The wonder and magic of Christmas.

The old train made a showing this year, and the kids created quite the village for it to run through.

Sometimes you have to take special provisions for especially good neighbor gifts lest they get eaten by someone else.

This is the magical age. Such wonder and delight.

Christmas Eve dinner. My favorite moment of the entire Holiday Season.

Christmas PJs

I created these custom smart lamps for the kids, each one trying to embody the personality of each kid.

All the presents are unwrapped.

This was a little different kind of a Christmas break. We had an attack of the flu over the break, which caused us to cancel a bunch of our plans, including our post Christmas visit to Idaho. So, once we were all feeling a little better (finally), we got out of the house and took the kids with us to the Little America for an outing. It wasn’t what we planned, but it made the moments we did get together feel even more meaningful.

The window displays at the Grand America were incredible, and I never imagined such a huge real gingerbread house as this could exist.

We enjoyed the lights on Temple Square and walking around the Conference Center.

I think we wore the kids out!

Back at home, Zoey’s imagination never ceases to amaze me.

New Year’s Eve fireworks with the Hoffmans.

We had an epic dance party and karaoke party to bring in the new year.

Happy New Year. And happy no longer being sick and canceling plans. We had Tim and Suzanne over for a New Years Dinner after we had to raincheck Christmas Eve dinner.

Josie, Jimmy, and their kids came to visit us and get some much requested cousin time in.

Then Mom and Dad stayed the night with us on their way to visit the brothers in New Mexico.

Kathryn’s Birthday!

Let’s Celebrate!

Birthday dinner at Magleby’s.

We’re almost there. We had our IMSAR holiday party, which we do in January every year. I’m up giving my presentation to the company.

My +1 for the night.

Our management team grabbed a fun picture for the new website update. www.IMSAR.com

Sunday Birthday Dinner for Kathryn with the Hawker’s.

Sam, Hanna, and Scottie were the much anticipated visitors. Everyone was so excited to see Scottie.

And that’s a wrap. What a great Holiday Season after all, in spite of some sickness and canceled plans along the way – full of family, memories, and plenty of reasons to be grateful.
