All About Eliza

This is a post all about Miss Eliza.  Here are some things that have been going on with her for the past little while.

First off, she has started preschool.  This little girl is growing up fast!

She still LOVES mermaids!

And Mer-kittys

And beautiful dresses! Recently, she’s been saying that she really wants to get married. When I asked her why she was excited to get married, she said it was so she could get a beautiful white dress. So, Kathryn got Eliza a beautiful white dress for an early birthday present. Upon opening it, Eliza had to put it right on, and then a full on dance party burst out, just like in the movies.

Birthday party at the bounce house.

On Eliza’s last day before her birthday, while Kathryn was on a girls trip, I took the kids for a pizza picnic at the church and we brought the bikes. As the girls were riding around, Eliza was getting tired of being lapped by Ashley. I commented to her that she would go faster if we took her training wheels off. I was a little surprised when she rode over and said ok. So we took the training wheels off and she hopped back on and I let the camera roll.

Wahoo! She’s got it! We tried a while ago, but she wasn’t ready yet. She was good on balance from all here time on her Stryder bike “motorcycle,” but she was lacking the muscle memory to pedal at the same time. So after riding the pedal bike with training wheels for a while, she now had the skills to ride like a boss.

Happy Birthday Eliza! I can’t believe our #2 is now 4! Growing up so fast!

This most amazing princess kitty mug started out as a white elephant gift to Kathryn.  It was a huge hit.

I love this sequence of pictures. Eliza just discovered the little kitties in the submarine hanging out with the mermaids. She thought it was soooooooo funny.

This girls loves to get dressed up!

And oh my does she love to color.  Most of the time she’d rather color than eat 🙂  These two are great coloring buddies.

Eliza-boo, we sure love you!

Mount Whitney

Mission accomplished.  I have hiked Mount Whitney, reaching an elevation of 14,500 feet.  The hike was 22 miles round trip, 7000 feet of total ascent, and took 15 hours, with one hour spent chillin on the summit.  It was an incredible experience, and in the end, wasn’t too hard given the preparation that I put in.  For the record, I do think that day hiking Kings Peak was at least as hard if not harder than Mt Whitney.  Here are some pictures and the story of the hike.

First off, it’s really quite incredible that Mt Whitney is about 90 miles away from Badwater Basin in Death Valley.  Badwater is 282 feet below sea level, while Mt Whitney is at 14,500 feet above sea level.  That’s the lowest and highest points in the continental US all within an extremely short distance.  Very interesting.

On the drive in. Our first glimpses of Mount Whitney.

Getting closer, and the mountains were growing larger.

Hiking permit in hand. The permits are awarded on a lottery based system. We were lucky to score such great weather for our hike.

On the road up to Whitney portal.

View from Whitney portal where we camped. We’ll be hiking all the way up to the top of that mountain the next day. For now, it’s time to set up camp and rest.

Zero dark thirty rollout.  We could have started a little later, but due to all the excitement of finally being here, getting to bed early, time zone change, and and overall crummy time sleeping while camping, we decided to head out.  Official start time, 3:20 am.

It was a gorgeous night.  Perfectly calm, quiet, and peaceful.  The stars were out in full force.  If only I could have taken a picture of them!  It was so neat to watch the pitch black night transition through twilight.

And then towards dawn as we continued to push up higher.

And then the sun burst through and illuminated the mountain peaks in splendid orange glow.  This is my favorite time of the morning!

And soon, it was full on morning time when we reached Trail Camp.  This was the last spot to get water before heading up the infamous 99 Switchbacks up to Trail Crest.

Beginning to push up the 99 switchbacks.  The pond from the previous picture is down below.

Ice on the trail.

Pushing higher and higher.  Almost to the pass.

Proof that I was here 🙂

Trail Crest!  Only 2 more miles to go!  We hiked up the valley to the right of the picture, and now we cut along the backside of the mountains in the center of the picture.

This is what the trail looked like in many places along the backside of the Needles.  It really wasn’t scary at all, but the picture is pretty gnarly.

This was the view of the valley looking off to the left.  Wow!

The trail came right up to the windows looking through many of the needles.  When you got to one, you could see the valley that we hiked up through to get here.

Rugged, leathery granite rock.  Such interesting textures.

The view through another one of the needles.

The final push is up the last rocky spine to the top of Mount Whitney.  Finally the summit shelter came into view.  The nice thing about this trail was there was absolutely no boulder hopping.  They moved the boulders out of the way and had a nice path the whole way up.  Compared to Kings Peak, this was pretty cushy.

Summit!  14,500 feet!  I could definitely tell I was running on thin air.  Everything took more effort and I had to move a little slower.  I felt good though.

This little guy at the very top was pretty fat.  He helps to keep the place clean.

After a nice long break, it was time to head back down.  I got to see some things from a different vantage point which was fun.

Pride Rock

Heading back down the 99 switchbacks.

From Trail Camp and below, we were seeing everything for the first time.  On the way up, we were hiking in the dark.

Marmot

On the way up, we could hear lots of streams and waterfalls, so it was great to get to see them.

Where did a giant meadow come from.  This is great!

Back at the beginning.  Mission accomplished!

Been there!

Thank you to Clayton for winning the lottery, and to Chris for driving, and for Richard and AJ for letting me join the team!  This was an incredible experience!

King in a Day

I’m preparing to hike Mount Whitney in September with some friends at work.  Mt Whitney is the highest mountain in the Continental United States.  No small feat for someone that hasn’t really done serious or even medium serious hiking for like 10 years.  As part of our training routine, we hiked Kings Peak…in a day.  In the end, it took just under 14 hours, 25.1 miles, and 5077 feet of ascent.  It was an experience to never be repeated, at least not for a very long time.  I’d make it a two night trip and break it up though.  My body held together pretty well, until like the last 6 miles when my knees began to give out and get really sore.  By the time we got to the end, I was walking like I had two peg legs.  Haha.  This was my first time in the Uintas.  They are really different than the Wasatch Mountains.  Much less rugged, but very high up.  All in all, it was a great trip.  Looking forward to “bagging” Mt Whitney.

Up at the top of this massive pile of rocks is Kings Peak.

This is scrambling/bouldering up the ridgeline to the peak.  You can see little people up ahead if you look closely.

Made it!  King in a day!

Moore Fun at Redfish Lake

We just had a lot of Moore Fun at Redfish Lake. Here are some of the highlights.

We decided to take up Thunder so we could haul up some extra kayaks up to the lake.  Here we go with three kids all within reach of each other.  Hope this doesn’t end poorly.

Listening to the Four Seasons as we drove over Galena Summit and through the Sawtooth Basin.  I’ve been in the backseat so many times on this very drive listening to this same music.  This was a surreal experience, driving our own truck with our own kids in the back.

We made it to the lake and got everybody dressed in their matching shirts for picture time.  It was a pretty gray day all around, but we still had lots of fun.

The whole Moore clan.

Individual family photo entertainment 🙂

I really enjoyed flying the Mavic on this trip.  I got 6 flights in up at the lake, and then another one at home.

360 degree panorama of Redfish Lake.

Dinner time.

Time for another couple flights.  Such a pretty vantage point.

The Bench Lakes.  We hiked up here back in 2013.  Here is that post to see those lakes from the ground.

All the siblings and spouses.

Story time.

We did the Fishhook Creek hike with the kids.  They did great.

Landon got to ride in the Kronk Chariot.

We made it to “Fishhook Creek at Trail’s End.”

Some of the mountains just starting to poke out from behind the clouds.

Kayaking with Ashley.

K and E in the other one.

This looks yummy.

Spit it out, son!  (We didn’t get it all out as we later found out…)

Time for another flight with the Mavic since I have a great model out in the water.  I love how Mom and Eliza are hovering in this picture.

Love it.  Need to frame this.

Time to head back to Filer.  Kids didn’t last long before they all fell asleep.

The next day Kathryn put on a baby shower for Bethany.

The men were in charge of watching the kids.

Full on pool party now that the baby shower was done.  Ashley was all of the sudden swimming under water and across the pool.  Huge progress with a good swimming lesson with Dad and watching the cousins do it.  Good work girl.

That’s all folks.  See you later.
